Parental obesity linked to delays in child development

Date- January 2nd 2017

Over 70% of adults in Australia are now overweight, or obese and not only did this pose significant health impacts for this adults, but studies are now showing that the genetic mode of inheritance is now having a huge physical, psychological and developmental impact on children of these adults.

Children of obese parents may be at risk for developmental delays, according to a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health. The investigators found that children of obese mothers were more likely to fail tests of fine motor skill — the ability to control movement of small muscles, such as those in the fingers and hands. Children of obese fathers were more likely to fail measures of social competence, and those born to extremely obese couples also were more likely to fail tests of problem solving ability.

The study, appearing in Pediatrics, was conducted by scientists at the NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

The researchers noted that studies indicate that obesity during pregnancy may promote inflammation, which could affect the fetal brain. They also added that some studies have indicated that obesity could affect the expression of genes in sperm and this is passed on via the genetic and paternal mode of inheritance.

Because of the link between parental obesity and developmental delays being confirmed, physicians should be taking parental weight into account when screening young children for delays and early interventional services.

The Prevention of Childhood Obesity Must Start Before a Couple Conceives.

overweight-mother-and-child-2

The key to preventing obesity in future generations is to make their parents healthier before they conceive, leading health researchers suggest.

In a series of papers, published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, the researchers say that the time before couples conceive represents a missed opportunity to prevent the transmission of obesity risk from one generation to the next. They argue that a new approach is needed to motivate future parents to live a healthier lifestyle.

There is now a wealth of evidence that the risk of obesity and its associated conditions, such as heart disease diabetes and some cancers, could impact the developing baby. In turn, when the child becomes a young adult they may pass the risk of obesity on to their children — it is a vicious cycle.

The nature of this problem is not adequately appreciated. Many young people, whilst appearing outwardly healthy, are nonetheless on a risky path to obesity and chronic disease and more likely to pass this risk to their children, the researchers warn. Many pregnancies are unplanned, and the special needs of adolescents and young people at this important time are not sufficiently recognised. Far from helping them to prepare and plan for pregnancy and parenthood, many public health programmes assume that their needs are similar to the general population and require no special measures or provisions.

In a comment piece accompanying the research papers, Professor Mark Hanson of the University of Southampton, says an entirely new approach is needed that engages parents-to-be and encourages them to be part of the solution.

Engaging future parents in leading healthier lives will not only promote their health later, but will give their children a healthier start to life.

Getting couples to have a healthier diet and lifestyle and manage weight is all part of the Shen Therapies Fertility program and something we have always promoted. We know that the health of the parents gets passed onto the offspring and why we are so focussed on helping a couple be the healthiest they can be. So many couples are choosing to overlook the obvious because it is all too hard. Well… so they think. A moderate weight loss of 10% body fat, or an increase for those underweight, can increase a couples chances of conception by 50%. That is huge.

This is why we have helped over 12,000 babies into the world and it is because we get the parents healthy before they try to have a baby. Healthy parents produce healthy babies.

Reasons You May Be Gaining Weight

Digital Bathroom Scale Displaying OMG Message

It May Not Just Be Your Food Intake

If you started taking in more calories than usual, or increase your high GI foods, or cut back on exercise, you wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers on the scale crept higher. Just remember that scales aren’t an accurate assessment of body fat and that muscle does weigh more that fat. It is the waist size that is the true measurement we want people to focus on. We should be more worried about waist gain, rather than weight gain.  But what if you’re doing everything the same as you always do, and your weight still goes up? It’s time to delve a little deeper into what else might be going on.

Lack of Sleep

There are two things that can affect your when you aren’t getting enough sleep and may have an impact on weight gain. First, if you’re up late, the odds are greater that you’re doing some late-night snacking, which means more intake of foods that may not be appropriate. The other reason involves what’s going on in your body when you’re sleep-deprived. This leads to running on adrenalin and increased cortisol levels as well. Changes in hormone levels increase hunger and appetite and also make you feel not as full after eating.

Stress

When life’s demands get too intense, our bodies go into survival mode. That fight or flight response kicks in and adrenalin and Cortisol, the “stress hormone,” is secreted, which causes an increase in appetite. Cortisol also makes you store fat. And of course, we may reach for high-calorie comfort foods in times of stress as well. This combination is a perfect breeding ground for weight gain.

Antidepressants and other Medications

An unfortunate side effect from some antidepressants is weight gain. Most antidepressants will give people a weight gain of around 3kgs per year of taking them. Talk to your healthcare practitioner about making changes to your treatment plan if you think your antidepressant is causing weight gain. There are natural options that can help with depression, without all the side effects. But never stop or change your medication on your own. Realize that some people experience weight gain after beginning drug treatment simply because they’re feeling better, which leads to a better appetite. Also, depression itself can cause changes in weight.

Steroids and Hormones

Anti-inflammatory steroid medications like prednisone are notorious for causing weight gain. All of the fertility hormones and hormone replacement drugs are steroidal based and cause weight gain too. Fluid retention and increased appetite are the main reasons. Some people may also see a temporary change in where their body holds fat while taking steroids.  Places like the face, the belly, or the back of the neck are all areas where you can see increase fluid retention. If you’ve taken steroids for more than a week, don’t stop them abruptly. That can lead to serious problems. They need to be tapered down slowly and weaned off properly. Check with your doctor first. Drugs That May Cause Weight Gain.

Several other prescription drugs are linked to weight gain. The list includes antipsychotic drugs (used to treat disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), along with medications to treat migraines, seizures, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Work with your doctor to find a medication that treats your symptoms and lessens side effects.

The Contraceptive Pill

Combination birth control pills (estrogen and progestin) do weight gain and fluid retention. There are other contraceptive methods that do not cause weight gain and fluid retention and have lower side effect profiles. If you’re still concerned about possible weight gain, talk to your healthcare practitioner.

Thyroid Issues

Thyroid issues can definitely be a big factor in weight gain. If your thyroid (the butterfly-shaped gland in the front of your neck) is not making enough thyroid hormone, you’re probably feeling tired, weak, and cold, and gaining weight. Without enough thyroid hormone, your metabolism slows, making weight gain more likely. Even a thyroid functioning at the lower end of the normal range might cause weight gain. Treating hypothyroidism with medication may reverse some of the weight gain.

Menopause

Most women do gain some weight around the time of menopause, but hormones probably aren’t the only cause. Aging slows your metabolism, so you burn fewer calories. We need women to realise this reality, which isn’t always easy to accept. Changes in lifestyle (such as exercising less) play a role in weight and waist gain. But where you gain weight may be related to menopause, with fat accumulating around your waist more than your hips and thighs. There are ways to control this in menopause too.

Cushing’s Syndrome

Weight gain is a common symptom of Cushing’s syndrome, a condition in which you are exposed to too much of the stress hormone cortisol, which in turn causes weight gain and other abnormalities. You can get Cushing’s syndrome if you take steroids for asthma, arthritis, or lupus. It can also happen when your adrenal glands make too much cortisol, or it could be related to a tumor. The weight gain may be most prominent around the face, neck, upper back, or waist.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is a common hormonal problem in all women of childbearing age. It is the most common gynaecological disorder in women and is becoming more prevalent due to our high GI diets and being passed on through genetic and hereditary link. Some women with PCOS grow many small cysts on their ovaries, some do not and only have the syndrome and associated symptoms. The condition leads to hormone imbalances that affect a woman’s menstrual cycle and can lead to extra body hair and acne. Women with this condition are resistant to insulin (the hormone that controls blood sugar), so it may cause weight gain. Many women with PCOS are normal, or underweight too. Women with PCOS are also at higher risk of diabetes. The weight tends to collect around the belly, putting these women at greater risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Quitting Smoking

Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. When you quit, you may gain some weight, but perhaps less than you think. On average, people who stop smoking gain less than 10 kilograms. You should stop feeling hungrier after several weeks, which will make it easier to help lose any weight you gained.

Rules If You Do Gain Weight

Rule 1:

Don’t stop taking any medications without first consulting your doctor. Recognize the importance of the drug you’re taking. It may be critical to your health. Also, something else may be causing you to gain weight. Your doctor can help you figure out what’s going on. There are also natural options that you may take also.

Rule 2:

Don’t compare yourself to other people taking the same drug. Not all people experience the same side effects on the same drug. Even if a drug caused someone else to lose weight, the same might not be true for you. Please do not Dr Google, or take advice off anyone other than a qualified healthcare professional.

Rule 3:

Remember that if the weight gain is just from water retention, it’s not permanent weight or fat. Once you’re done taking the drug or your condition is under control, the puffiness from fluid retention may ease. Stick to a lower GI diet in the meantime too. High GI foods such as breads, cereals, cakes, pasta, sugars etc, all make the body store fats and stop the burning of fats and cause inflammation.

Rule 4:

Check with your healthcare practitioner about another medication you can take. In many cases, your healthcare practitioner can switch you to another medication that might not have the same side effects. There are also natural options that you may be able to take without all the nasty side effects of your medication

Rule 5:

Learn if the weight gain is from a decrease in metabolism — from either a medical condition or medication. And if so, take the time to participate in metabolism-raising activities. Get moving!

Also realise that it is waist gain you need to worry about, not weight gain. Many people obsess unnecessarily over weight gain and the scales. When you start to exercise, you may in fact be putting on muscle (which is great) and this will equate to the scales being heavier. Fat does not weigh as much as muscle, so sometimes you wont realise you have actually lost fat and gained muscle. This is why waist measurement, not weight measurement, is the most accurate way to measure proper fat lose and proper waist and weight management.

Seminal fluid improves fertility women and improves IVF pregnancy rates

o-SPERM-FERTILITY-facebookSeminal fluid is often viewed as simply a vehicle to carry sperm to fertilize the female egg, but a more complex function in influencing female reproductive physiology is now evident
Remarkably, seminal fluid contains special signaling agents that interact with the female reproductive tract to prime the immune response, with consequences for fertility and pregnancy outcome. This research isn’t new and we have spoken about this in previous posts. But we now know a bit more about how sperm may assist in implantation for, especially for IVF.

See our other post http://shentherapies.com.au/sex-around-the-time-of-embryo-transfer-increases-the-likelihood-of-successful-early-embryo-implantation-and-development/

Recent studies demonstrate a key role for seminal fluid in enabling  embryo implantation and optimal placental development. In particular, seminal fluid promotes health immune responses which facilitate embryo implantation by suppressing inflammation, assisting uterine circulation and blood supply and also protecting the embryo.

There is emerging evidence  where seminal fluid provokes an adaptive immune response in the cervical tissues after contact at intercourse, and spermatozoa accessing the higher tract potentially affect the endometrium directly. Research has now shown that sperm and seminal fluid actually help with endometrial receptivity, which is needed to create the right environment for a healthy embryo to implant.

These biological responses may have clinical significance, explaining why

[1] intercourse in IVF ET cycles improves the likelihood of pregnancy

[2] inflammatory disorders of gestation are more common in women who conceive after limited exposure to seminal fluid of the prospective father

[3] preeclampsia incidence is elevated after use of donor oocytes or donor sperm where prior contact with conceptusalloantigens has not occurred.

Research like this is important to define the mechanisms through which seminal fluid interacts with female reproductive tissues, to provide knowledge that may assist in preconception planning and infertility treatment. It also bring attention to the fact that couples still need to be engaging in regular intercourse during IVF cycles to help not only with implantation, but to increase pregnancy rates through optimization on the endometrial lining through contact with seminal fluid. Regular intercourse also promotes connection and bonding for the couple as well and this is something that is very much overlooked.

Alcohol Decreases Fertility & Makes Gynaecological Conditions Worse

glasses of alcohol

In today’s modern society, alcohol has become the cornerstone for social engagements, business dinners and after work relaxation. It is important to realise however, that alcohol can directly impact the fertility of both males and females. In males it can decrease sperm quality, reduce testicular size, decrease libido and cause impotence, all of which can impair fertility. In females it has a more systemic response, affecting the reproductive hormones, leading to abnormalities in the menstrual cycle and an increased risk of miscarriage.

Effect of Alcohol on Conception for Men

Fecundability refers to the probability of conception during a particular menstrual cycle. It is dependent on the reproductive potential of both partners. Alcohol decreases fecundability by its effect on sperm quality and quantity. Men who continue to consume alcohol on a regular basis, can decrease their sperm motility, morphology and their DNA in the sperm. All of which are important factors in achieving fertility. While outwardly a man’s sperm may look OK, many forget that inwardly, the sperm DNA could be highly fragmented and unless this is tested every ejaculation, you will have no idea how bad the sperm actually is. A one off DNA fragmentation analysis does not mean the sperm each time is OK. It only measures the sperm from the ejaculate that was tested and sperm quality can change by as much as 20% each ejaculation.

Testicular size is also affected by alcohol intake; and can also affect sperm production. Alcohol is a depressant of the central nervous system (CNS), and can disrupt the autonomic system of the CNS. These effects are temporary and short lived. Abnormal sperm production is also temporary and also can resume after abstaining from alcohol.

One study, this one looking at couples going through IVF treatment, found that for every additional drink a man consumed per day, the risk of conception not leading to a live birth increased by 2 to 8 times. This was especially true if the drinking occurred within a month of the IVF treatment.

Effect of Alcohol on Conception for Women

In women, alcohol affects fecundability, by disrupting the delicate balance of the menstrual cycle. Clinical research data published in the “British Medical Journal” suggests that women, who drank socially, 1-5 drinks per week, were at a greater risk of decreased fecundability when compared to women who remained abstinent. These findings underscore the importance of remaining abstinent while attempting to conceive.

Alcohol disrupts the hormonal imbalance of the female reproductive system, leading to menstrual irregularities, and even Anovulatory cycles, (menstrual cycles where ovulation fails to occur). Menstrual pain can directly be linked to the amount of alcohol consumed in the lead up to the menses and consumptions of alcohol, even small amounts, exacerbates most gynaecological conditions. These changes can drastically decrease a woman’s chance of becoming pregnant and thus affect fertility.

Alcohol effects fertility in both partners, and can do so in so many ways. For couples who desire to have a baby, it is best to stay away from drinking completely. Presently there is no safe limit of alcohol intake; even socially acceptable amounts of alcohol can affect fertility potential and outcomes. Moderate drinking (1-2 drinks in one sitting) is probably okay, especially if you reserve those drinks to a few times a week, instead of daily. However, if you’re going through IVF treatment, or trying to conceive naturally, you might consider cutting out alcohol for the time being.

Trying to conceive is a special time in a couple’s life, it should be filled with love, devotion and safe health practices, which means a healthy diet and lifestyle and having a healthy mind too.

A healthy detoxification program is also a great idea for those trying to increase their fertility and get their reproductive systems working better. Healthy eggs and health sperm make healthy babies. Healthy reproductive systems also mean better menstrual cycles and better testicular health too.

Tips For People To Cut Most Of The Additional & Hidden Sugar From Their Diet

sugar-cubes

Sugar is one of the hardest things to cut from a person’s diet and often why it is likened to coming off hard drugs. To be honest, many times it is just as hard as coming off hard drugs and the side effects of doing so can feel just as bad for some people. There is no doubt that sugar is a drug, because so many people are addicted to it and cannot live without it. It is an addiction on epidemic proportion and it is causing so many health issues for us as a population.

So how do you get rid of it out of your diet?

Well, firstly, we need to recognise that the body does need small amounts of sugar, but it needs to come from whole foods and not be refined, or from processed sugars. Secondly, we need people to read the back of packets of food they are buying and start to see how much additional sugar they are getting in their diet. Lastly, we need people to recognize that no matter what sugar substitute they use (honey, dates, dried fruits, splenda etc) it is still sugar and it still reacts in the body the same way. Sugar is sugar and we need people to recognise this. People have this perception that using dates, honey etc in their foods, makes the food more healthy and OK to eat. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sweets and still treats no matter what form they come in.

We also need to get people to look at what they are eating and see if you are eating a well balanced diet. Oftentimes, people crave sweets and sugar because their diet is too low in protein and fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition, if you are eating a lot of refined and processed foods and sugar you will crave more sugar as the sugars burn off and then you hit a sugar low.

Here are some helpful tips to reduce added sugar intake:

  1. Always start your day off with protein. Whatever you start your day with, regulates your sugars for the rest of the day. If you start your day with sugar (cereals, toast, sweet things, and high GI carbs) then your day will be one big sugar ping pong session. Starting your day with protein helps regulate your sugars and stops those sugar cravings throughout the day.
  2. We need to make sure that every meal on snack has protein with it. We also need to make sure we have at least 2 handfuls of nuts and seeds per day, two tablespoons of healthy oils per day and have two servings of fruit per day. Especially berries, green apple, oranges etc. You also need to be eating 3 cups of vegetables per day (including salads). You should be drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day and also adding some electrolytes to your water at least once per day to help stop dehydration.
  3. Omit all sweetened beverages. Just stop drinking them and go cold turkey. You can also just start replacing them daily. Replace with water, coconut water, sparkling water or herbal teas. Make up jug of water with some lemon and mint and keep it in your fridge. The lemon and mint add flavour to the water, but they also have health benefits too.
  4. If you add sugar to coffee or tea, slowly cut down the amount that you put in by half each time until you find you no longer need it. You can also start by adding Rapadura sugar to your coffee, or tea (which is unrefined sugar cane juice that is crystallised and not as sweet, or processed as refined sugars). You can then slowly reduce this.
  5. Replace sugary foods with real whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
  6. Don’t skip meals. This is where most people go wrong and when their sugars and energy levels get low; their body then craves to be topped up. Unfortunately many people make the wrong choices in what they then eat. It is important to make sure you eat at regular intervals throughout the day to keep your blood sugar stable. People should be eating 5 small meals per day and eating every 3-4 hours to ensure they maintain their energy levels and stop sugar fluctuations and sugar cravings.
  7. Add spices and herbs to your foods and cut out the refined sauces. Use spices and herbs such as pepper, cayenne pepper, parsley, basil, oregano, turmeric, ginger, garlic. Any spice or herbs you can think of.
  8. Make sure you exercise at least 3-4 times per week, but if you can start your day with some sort of movement, this will help with your metabolism and sugar cravings too. It will also help maintain healthy weight and keep your body healthy too.
  9. Eat whole foods and omit as many processed foods as possible.
  10. Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Aim to get between seven and eight hours of sleep each night. If you are sleep deprived, your body will crave more sweets/sugar. When the body is tired, it just wants sugars and to fuel up quickly.
  11. Take some sugar regulating herbs and supplements. Supplements such as chromium and herbs such as cinnamon help with controlling blood sugars too.
  12. Take a Prebiotic and Probiotic daily to help with god gut health. With good gut health, you won’t crave sugars as much either.

If you need help with controlling sugar craving, or wanting to know how to cut sugar from your diet, then please give us a call and make an appointment to help you get your diet and health back on track now

About Dr Andrew Orr’s Highly Successful Fertility Program

The Shen Therapies Reproductive Medicine Fertility Program is run by Dr Andrew Orr, who has over 20 years experience in the treating Fertility and Gynaecological issues and hold dual qualifications in both western medicine and complementary medicine to bring people a true integrative approach to fertility issues. He has helped over 12,000 babies into the world via his highly successful Fertility Programme. There really aren’t many people that can say that and his qualification are also a one of a kind. There is really nobody else with his qualifications to date. His success has been documented nationwide in the media and he is known as “The Brisbane Baby Maker”

The Fertility Programme is very through. Many people don’t realise what goes on in the background before you even step through our door. Comprehensive questionnaires are sent out to people and medical reports, blood tests, medical investigations, surgical intervention (if needed) and everything that is needed for your reproductive and health history is chased up and checked so that people are diagnosed correctly.

Both men and women are assessed as fertility issues are not just related to females. Over 50% of fertility issues are related to make factors and many miscarriage issues are related to chromosomal factors relating to the male also. Dr Andrew Orr is always seeing many male issues are missed due to non compliance and assumptions. Biology 101 tells us it takes a sperm and an egg to make a baby, not just an egg. Everything for the couple, or anyone needing fertility treatment, is assessed properly and thoroughly before you even walk in the door.

Fertility treatments aren’t just about having Acupuncture or holistic medicine either. Couples are then assessed and treated on both a medical and complementary medicine level and a comprehensive report is written up with all the changes and investigations that you will need to get do. These recommendations are then constantly checked and followed up to ensure couples get all the investigations done and that all the requested changes are made. There is no stone left unturned.

The program encompasses dietary changes, addressing nutritional deficiencies, reducing stress, managing emotions, enhancing immunity and improving sperm and egg quality. We also address known causes of infertility including Endometriosis, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and any other pelvic pathology that may be causing fertility issues. Every test or investigation that needs to be done is done and thoroughly looked over.

The program begins with the Fertility Education Session, lasting 3 hours and conducted once per month, or as needed, depending on numbers. These Fertility Education Sessions are conducted to small groups of clients and delivered by myself so that every couple is educated on the changes and investigation that will need to increase their chances of having a baby.

Attendance at a Fertility Education Session is compulsory for singles/couples on the program. At the sessions, clients receive a full report based on previously completed questionnaires and test results, as well as crucial herbs and supplements to begin the journey to conception. Soon after the education session, clients attend a 1 on 1 consult with me to receive additional information and recommendations as well as a treatment plan moving forward.

Treatments on the Shen Therapies Reproductive Medicine fertility Program also involves fortnightly acupuncture appointments for both men and women and the use of individual tailored herbs, herbs from the ConceptShen fertility range and vitamins according to the individual’s holistic diagnosis and their medical diagnosis as well. We have specially trained registered acupuncturists that are also part of the Shen Therapies Reproductive Medicine team.

(The event isn’t part of our fertility program though and isn’t the patient fertility education session, that is the start of being on our Fertility Program. This is just an information event, for those they may be interested in our program and to also provide some information to the public. )

For years Dr Andrew Orr has seen couples, single women, same sex couples and anyone requiring fertility help, walk through his door, emotionally exhausted, desperate and at breaking point. The problem for many of these people is that they have not been investigated properly by everyone they have seen, both medically and holistically. Worse still some of the people are already at a point of giving up, believing they have done everything possible, when in fact they haven’t. The sad fact is that some people may have already given up thinking they did everything, when actual fact they may not have. It is so sad when Dr Andrew Orr hears stories like this is why we are holding this night to help couples, single women and same sex couples, get the right information and help them to be properly diagnosed or investigated.

About Dr Andrew Orr’s Highly Successful Fertility Program

_DSC1580

We have specially trained registered acupuncturists that are also part of the Shen Therapies Reproductive Medicine team

Post-Partum

Post-partum refers to the time after childbirth. Post-partum care is too often forgotten as Mother’s primary concern is now her child. Restoring Qi and balance in the body is so important and our Post-Partum treatments are designed to do just this.

Following childbirth a women’s condition is very vulnerable and much care should be taken to eat well and rest. Unfortunately in our western society the trend is for women to leave their beds shortly after childbirth and even go back to work only days after this vulnerable time.

Because of the demands of childbirth much blood is lost during and after labour. This leads to deficiency of blood, chronic tiredness and fatigue. The immune system is susceptible to disease and complications such as Post Natal depression can arise. There is so much emphasis on what women should and shouldn’t do during pregnancy, but there is very little information about care after childbirth. A mother needs to be healthy in order to look after her new baby.

From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, childbirth is seen as a deficiency of QI (Vital Energy) and Blood. Organs such as the Spleen (producer of blood), the Liver (stores blood) and the Heart (commander of blood) are all deficient as a result of blood loss. This can cause disharmony in the body.

Signs and Symptoms of Qi and Blood Deficiency include:

  • Tiredness, fatigue
  • Pale skin, complexion
  • Weakness of limbs
  • Dizziness, light-headedness
  • Poor appetite
  • Blurred vision
  • Depression
  • Poor memory
  • Insomnia
  • Loose stools
  • Pale tongue
  • Weak pulse

If lost Qi and Blood is not replaced it can lead to serious complications that may manifest immediately or years later. It may even affect a woman’s ability to fall pregnant again.

Specially formulated Chinese Herbs as well as Acupuncture are effective methods to restore Qi and blood and an integral part of Chinese Medicine. We encourage all women to book in for a Post partum treatment after childbirth to restore their Qi and Blood and restore their energy and vitality again.

There are also a number of things that you can do at home to help restore balance to the body. See our Fact Sheets and Forms page for more information on Post Partum.
